Application Patents

In 2003, Thomas Emde registered a broad patent portfolio for the application of LED technology for edge lighting with glass or plastic glass, which he successfully sold to Philips a few years later. At the time of the sale, he secured in advance the licence to realise his own projects. With emdelight-glass, glass and light form a unit and become a flexible building material. Possible applications are windows, facade elements, partition walls, stair railings, lift cabins, furniture and much more. Nobody at the time could imagine that it would one day be possible to build complete luminaires with the option of edge feed. Thomas Emde therefore failed to secure the application with the greatest potential for himself. Further application patents for flat OLED panels and new possibilities for the sensible and marketable use of OLED lighting technology followed.
