For the idea of a real mass application of OLED lighting technology, Thomas Emde applied his patent for the coating of rotationally symmetrical hollow bodies already in 2007. This patent application is now considered as basic patent for an OLED retrofit lamp. Another basic patent, in this case for the idea of a transparent display, is the so-called "OLED Window Element", which Emde registered as early as 2003. How much Thomas Emde as a visionary was ahead of his time with his ideas is shown by the fact that the first transparent OLED displays have only been on the market 17 years later since 2020.
