Commerzbank

Frankfurt am Main, Germany 1999

The bank tower built by Norman Foster consists of three segments arranged around a three-cornered glass atrium. Nine glass gardens ascend spirally from the atrium to the open terrace on the roof. The concept of the lighting design is to allow artificial light to shine out everywhere at night where natural light enters the building during the day. Thus, the gardens that bestow the façade with its rhythmic structure are visible even when it’s dark outside. The yellow light flowing from the atrium transforms the three towers of different heights into an urban landscape afloat in the night sky.
