Cathedrals are the embodiment of light symbolism, as the interplay of light and shadow endows meaning to the architecture and symbolism. Taking up on this, the lighting concept for the Frankfurt Dom was based on the respectful and careful use of artificial light. In addition to the basic ambient lighting, the focus is on the accentuation of the vertical elements of the architecture and the spatial differentiation of the façade. A warm, candle-like light glows gently from the tracery windows, while dichroitic glass filters adjust the color of the light source to the reddish tone of the sandstone.
